“And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. Then Jesus said to them, ‘Follow me and I will make you become fishers of men’.” Mark 1:16-17. Jesus had a call on their lives, as He does ours, and He didn’t expect them to ‘become’ something before He called them. He called them, commanded them to follow Him and then promised to make them become. All they had to do was follow Him.
Whatever it is He has called us to be, He has promised to make us become. It’s another one of His promises that we can stand on. I know He has called me to be a wife, a mother, caretaker, homeschool mom, a teacher, a speaker and a writer and yet I feel completely inadequate to be any of these things. So I work and strive at it only to be left feeling tired, frustrated and defeated. In my eagerness to be all that I am called to be and to serve Him in everything I do, I strive to make myself become...
So what does become mean? Become is to be suitable, to befit, to be worthy of.....Jesus promised to make me worthy of that which I am called. I can’t make myself worthy. The Passion Translation says, “and I will transform you into men who catch people instead of fish.’’ I don’t know about you but that brings me a great deal of peace. I can rest in that. I don’t have to work at becoming...or strive for it. I don’t have to become anything. It is only in my following Him that He promises to make me these things. He has promised to equip me to become. He will put in my heart the ability...Exodus 35:34.
I simply have to follow Jesus. Verse 17 in The Amplified says it this way, “Follow me as my disciples, accepting Me as your Master and Teacher and walking the same path of life that I walk and I will make you become....” 1 John 4:17, “As He is, so are we in this world.” NKJV
When He called me to homeschool my two youngest children I thought there was no way I could do it. How could someone as uneducated as I am be called to educate her children? But I was sure this was something He was calling me to do. So I simply submitted to His will and to doing my very best to follow Him and He is making me become a homeschool mom. The same is true for almost everything I believe I am called to do. Jazzercise instructor?? Me, really? Caretaker? Group leader? Missionary? Prayer warrior? Speaker? Student and teacher of His word? Writer??? Praise God He is transforming me into that which He wants me to be and I don’t have to figure out to become these things.
He calls...He supplies...He equips.
I follow Him.
My job: obedience. His job: everything else.
I am in the process of becoming...
